Chicago’s Angel Reese extends double-double streak before Barclays Center sets record of 17,758 in New York

The Chicago Sky rookie sensation extended his WNBA record with his 15th straight triple-double in  a 91-76 loss  to the New York Liberty on Thursday night. The 17,758 fans who attended the game set a record attendance at Barclays Center.

“The basketball gods just kept blessing me. I don’t even know how I did it,” Reese said after her 10-point, 10-rebound performance. “Obviously I didn’t have a great night tonight.”

It was the second time in two days that she had to wait until the final minutes to keep a streak alive. On Wednesday, she did it by making two free throws in the final seconds of a home win over Atlanta.

“I just try to go out and do everything I can to win,” Reese said.

She struggled against New York’s big forwards on Thursday and had just four points and three rebounds in the first half. She got her 10th point with just under four minutes left and then grabbed three rebounds in the next two minutes to cap it.

When she grabbed her 10th rebound with 2:12 left in the game, cheers erupted from the sold-out crowd, who had given her a big ovation during pregame introductions.

“She plays hard, she doesn’t play to set records, she plays to win,” Chicago coach Teresa Weatherspoon said. “She works hard, every time you look at the stat sheet, she has a double-double. I’m sure she wants to win more than just double-double.”

Reese, the seventh pick in the draft, broke Candace Parker’s record of 12 consecutive double-doubles last Sunday.

“I have a long way to go, but to be recognised alongside some of the greatest to date is absolutely amazing for me,” she said.

The attendance record surpassed the previous record set earlier this season by Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.

Reese is the biggest reason.

“I built a platform outside of basketball and I think a lot of people love me. I have nails, I have hair, eyelashes. I am Barbie,” she said. “A lot of girls look up to me, they say I want to be like you. They want to wear pink, they want to do girly things but also want to be a dog on the court.”
