Doctor Who star Nicola Coughlan’s comedy series Big Mood has received an exciting update. It was announced this week that the sitcom has been renewed for a second season.

Big Mood, which airs on Channel 4 in the UK and streams on Tubi in the US, features Coughlan and Lydia West (It’s a Sin) as lifelong friends, Maggie and Eddie respectively. In the first season, their friendship faced strain for the first time due to mental health pressures as well as personal and professional drama. On Feb. 11, Channel 4 announced that both actors would be returning for more episodes, with series creator Camilla Whitehil back as showrunner.

Big Mood Season 2 jumps ahead one year, as Maggie and Eddie struggle to move on from their fractured friendship. “It’s been a year since Maggie and Eddie last saw each other, without any contact between the best friends,” the official synopsis reads. “When Eddie suddenly returns for a wedding, she isn’t alone – Maggie has competition, in the form of an infuriatingly positive spiritual healer named Whitney. Can Maggie and her special brand of chaos find space in Eddie’s new life? Or will Maggie lose Eddie forever?”

Coughlan reacted to Big Mood‘s renewal by saying she was “deeply grateful” that such a “mad, funny, sad show” found an audience. “It’s been one of the greatest joys of my life making it, and I’m beyond delighted that we get to come back and tell the next chapter of Maggie and Eddie’s story. Rats at the ready,” the actor said via Channel 4. “So excited to reunite with my besties and work on series 2! I can’t wait to see the scripts and get back to the world of Eggie,” West added.

Whitehill joked that she was “overjoyed to be bringing Big Mood back for another round” because she had “no plan B and zero transferable skills.” Speaking to Channel 4, she added, “Discovering that there are actually loads of weirdos who like the same weirdo stuff as me has been a real privilege. My eternal love and gratitude go to everyone at Channel 4, Dancing Ledge and Fremantle for their fierce support and hard work. My ongoing blackmail campaign against Nicola Coughlan and Lydia West continues in earnest. They’ll never escape me.”

NuWho fans know how emotional Doctor Who can be, with episodes like “The Girl in the Fireplace” and “The Girl Who Waited” being especially moving.

The first season of Big Mood, which premiered on Channel 4 in March 2024, received positive critical reviews, in addition to being nominated for Best TV Comedy Drama at the Comedy.co.uk Awards in January 2025. West and Coughlan are joined in the sitcom by The Witcher actor Eamon Farren, Love Actually‘s Joanna Page, The Wheel of Time star Luke Fetherston, and Veep‘s Sally Phillips, among others.
