This month Russell T Davies has been giving an update to Doctor Who Magazine about progress on next year’s season… and beyond

Writing in his regular DWM column, Russell T Davies has dropped some intriguing little pieces of information about upcoming episodes. He’s also provided an update on how progressed the episodes are towards their transmission next year. Davies even dropped a hint about more to come beyond that.

He’s confirmed for the first time that Varada Sethu will make her first appearance as the Doctor’s new companion Belinda Chandra in the first episode of the new season. The following Episode 2 reportedly features the most ambitious visual FX yet seen on Doctor Who. He’s also described Episode 3 as this year’s traditional annual spine chiller, in the vein of 73 YardsBlink, and Midnight. We also now know that next year will climax again with an epic two part finale. That’s not a surprise, as every Russell T Davies series since 2005 has done the same.

Of the eight episodes, only the finale is still in the initial editing phase. He describes all the other episodes are between 80 and 95% complete, with Episode 4 furthest along, awaiting Murray Gold’s music to accompany the already complete visuals.

There’s also a new ‘secret project’ in the works, while work has begun on the scripts for Ncuti Gatwa’s third season

Beyond that, three of the episodes for Ncuti Gatwa’s third season as the Doctor already have scripts. However, with the run of episodes not yet formally greenlit, these are still not the final versions.

There’s also a previously unknown “Secret Project” on the way. Is it actual Doctor Who or, like The War Between the Land and the Sea, some sort of spin-off? Could it be a revival of the Doctor Who live events like the 2013 Celebration or the 2015 Festival? Who knows, it could be something as small scale as the contribution to next year’s Children in Need.

All this is just a taste of the new information you can find in this month’s Doctor Who Magazine, including the names of key new characters appearing next season.
