Doctor Who legends return as four new spin-offs confirmed
Companions of the First Doctor are getting new adventures…
Doctor Who has announced four new audio adventures, with legends from the show’s past set to return in the spin-offs.
As part of the Companion Chronicles range, Big Finish Productions has now announced Families, a brand-new boxset of dramatised readings which will focus on the “plucky adventurers” who accompanied the First Doctor (then played by William Hartnell).
The returning stars include Maureen O’Brien, Carole Ann Ford and Peter Purves, with the trio reprising their roles as Vicki, Susan Foreman and Steven Taylor respectively. Also part of the cast are Stephen Noonan and Lauren Cornelius, with the pair playing the Doctor and Dodo Chaplet.
The first adventure, The Temple of Light, sees Vicki in an “entirely unfamiliar civilisation” after time has stopped and the TARDIS has frozen, with the Doctor and the other companions “nowhere to be seen”.
Stardust and Ashes follows Susan as she recalls a story from her past, which saw the companion and her “travelling family” at “the mercy of machine intelligence” as their lives were trapped, reflecting on the “lessons” she learned.
Purves’ Steven is at the centre of The White Ship, which sees him and the Doctor land in Normandy during the medieval era as King Henry I prepares to set sail for England, with Steven being involved in a case of mistaken identity.
The final story, The Y Factor, sees Dodo – who was originally played by Jackie Lane – and the Doctor battle an “alien fungus” that can warp one’s thoughts, leading to disastrous consequences.
“It is an absolute honour to be producing the new Companion Chronicles,” said Dominic G Martin. “This legendary range has allowed the Doctor’s beloved friends to flourish through their own personal tales – lived by them, and told by them.
“The writers have cooked up beautiful tales for Susan, Vicki and Stephen, played by the wonderfully talented original actors, and we’re re-introducing Dodo… I sincerely hope everyone enjoys what we have to offer – here’s to more years of Companion Chronicles!”
