Jodie made history as the first female Doctor in the long-standing BBC series in 2017 when she was cast as Peter Capaldi’s replacement. Despite her success over the next five years, she confessed her concerns to initially taking on the role, remarking that she had feared to mess it up for other actors.

She said: “Everyone’s Doctor until then was a white man. They are very different actors, but they all fit a specific mould – and I didn’t”

“If Peter hadn’t been good as the Doctor, it would only have reflected on him. Whereas I felt that if I wasn’t very good at this, I’ve [messed] it for other actors. I think it’s completely unacceptable if that was the case, but that’s how I felt.”

Jodie officially handed over the Tardis reins to David Tennant who then handed it over to Ncuti Gatwa will be back on screens soon as the Fifteenth Doctor.

Away from the TARDIS, Jodie is married to the acclaimed Hollywood actor and writer Christian Contreras. The pair got married back in Arizona come December 2008. Christian boasts roles in stellar productions such as Halo: Nightfall, Zero Dark Thirty and American Odyssey. He also features as Jerry Knox in the Disney Plus series A Thousand Blows starring opposite Stephen Graham.

The talented duo met at the London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating together in 2005. Jodie and Christian, who hails from Tucson, live in London with their two children.

Jodie has generally kept details about her husband private, but has previously said: “He’s from Tucson and I’m from Huddersfield. But I don’t divulge stuff about him, because I don’t think he’d appreciate it when he’s not here to speak for himself. We do get comments like, ‘Where the hell did you two meet?’ We’re like an international couple.

Things have not always been easy for Jodie as her family suffered tragedy when her nephew Harry Whittaker, who portrayed Leo Dingle in Emmerdale and had Down’s Syndrome, died aged just three in July 2014. Emmerdale paid a heartfelt tribute to Harry at the end of an episode with the phrase “To Harry, with love” accompanied by a photo of him dressed as Spiderman.

As an advocate for Mencap, Jodie expressed her pride in being an aunt to Harry and emphasized the need for a supportive and non-judgmental environment for individuals with learning disabilities, including those with Down’s syndrome.
