Rylan in tears over Doctor Who role as he breaks silence on surprise casting
Eurovision Song Contest commentator Rylan Clark will appear as the host of a space version of the competition on Doctor Who when the BBC show returns for its new series

Rylan Clark has opened up about being cast in the new series Doctor Who in a video message to fans.
It was announced earlier that Rylan, 36, will play the host of the Interstellar Song Contest – described as a version of the Eurovision Song Contest out in space – on the BBC show. His role was revealed in a trailer for the new series, which launches in April, that was released this weekend.
The episode, which is reportedly the fifth in the upcoming series, is expected to air on May 17, which is the same day that the grand final of this year’s Eurovision – held in Basel, Switzerland – will take place. His role comes following Rylan having been a semi-finals commentator in recent years.
Following the news of his part, Rylan has posted about the experience on his Instagram Story. It’s included him sharing a video of himself discussing the casting and telling fans that he was left in tears after receiving the call that showrunner Russell T Davies had a role for him in the new series.

The BBC Radio host said: “So I have been keeping that secret for a year. I am so excited. I am a massive, massive Whovian. I love Doctor Who. I’ve loved it for years. And when I got that call I was so overwhelmed and I’m not gonna lie, I did have a little tear. Maybe a few more tears. It was the best experience of my life.”
Rylan went on to suggest that his episode was filmed after he hosted Dating Naked UK in Colombia towards the start of last year. He then concluded the message by telling viewers that he’s “so happy” to have worked on Doctor Who.
He said: “I’d just flown back from Colombia [and] went straight to Cardiff. I’m so, so happy. Like so happy that I can say I’m in Doctor Who.” He added: “Iconic. What a moment. This is like bucket list so thank you, Russell. I love you so much.”
In a statement released by the BBC, Rylan said: “As a massive Whovian, getting the call to be in Doctor Who was a call I’ve always dreamed of getting. The episode is all my favourite things about the show with an added song contest set in space. It really is a dream come true. I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It really is going to be out of this world.”
