Doctor Who’s Jo Martin will return to title role ‘in a shot’ amid Ncuti Gatwa exit rumours

While Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa is rumoured to be stepping back as the titular time lord after the next series, there’s one former Doctor who is keen to return in the role
Doctor Who star Jo Martin has revealed that she would return to the role of the Fugitive Doctor “in a shot” amid rumours of Ncuti Gatwa leaving the show.
Jo, who is returning as Suzie Harris in the new series of U&Drama’s The Marlow Murder Club, told The Mirror in an exclusive chat that she’ll always be a part of Doctor Who after appearing in four episodes as the Fugitive Doctor.
Jo last appeared on the sci-fi show back in 2022, playing an incarnation of the Doctor from before the time of the First Doctor (William Hartnell) who encountered Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.
When asked whether she would return to the show, Jo told The Mirror: “Listen, I had a great time doing Doctor Who. It’s done me nothing but favours. It’s the job that keeps on giving. Once you’ve done Doctor Who, and once you’ve played a doctor, you’re never not going to be a part of the show.

“They’ve just released the Doctor Who audios that I did, which are just phenomenal if I say so myself, they’re so good, and I’m sure I’ll be going back to do more of those.”
She added: “I would be surprised if I never go back to the TV show. I would be happy to go because you’re never far from that phone call. Who knows when they go, ‘Jo, can you?’ I’ll be there like a shot because it feeds into all my skills.”
Last month, rumours of Ncuti Gatwa leaving Doctor Who hit the headlines, while the BBC told The Mirror that any speculation over the show being shelved was false. “This story is incorrect,” a spokesperson said. “As we have previously stated, the decision on season 3 will be made after season 2 airs. The deal with Disney+ was for 26 episodes – and exactly half of those still have to transmit. And as for the rest, we never comment on the Doctor and future storylines.”
Meanwhile, Jo is reuniting with her Marlow Murder Club co-stars Samantha Bond and Cara Horgan for a new series of The Marlow Murder Club – with Jo admitting that she was relieved when it was renewed.

“There are no guarantees, especially in this current climate where everything’s getting cancelled,” she said. “You get to my age and you’re just hoping. We’re actors – I’ve never been on solid ground so it’s nothing new but it would be a big mistake not to bring it back because the characters have so much more story in them. You have four female leads who are running the show, I’m not just assisting some man while they solve a crime.”
In the new series, single mother Suzie – played by Jo – takes on a newfound independence as her teenage daughter flees the nest. “As a mother myself, we all make this mistake where sometimes you pour so much into your children and you give nothing back to yourself,” she says. “It’s about getting them shoes, getting them to eat, keeping them alive – and then they get to the stage where they’re not needing you so much anymore.”
While the trio begin investigating the death of Sir Peter Bailey – a Marlow resident who is found dead under a cabinet in a locked room.
