David Tennant weighs in on rumors that he has been tapped to return to the TARDIS following Ncuti Gatwa’s potential Doctor Who exit. Tennant first joined the series as the Tenth Doctor in 2005 and led the series until 2010. After a major cameo in 2013, he made another surprising return in 2022’s “The Power of the Doctor,” portraying the fourteenth incarnation of the Doctor for the show’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Tennant starred in three special episodes before departing the series once again.
As Doctor Who season 15 draws closer to its end and the show’s future remains uncertain, Tennant was asked about the rumors that he had been selected to lead the show once more when speaking to The Guardian. The actor immediately debunked the idea, stating, “Ha, nobody’s told me that!“ He then went on to defend his fellow Doctors, Gatwa and Jodie Whittaker, from questionable online debates, stating:
These debates – and it’s not even a debate, it’s a small clutch of people shouting very loudly, amplified by certain elements of the press – are not reflective of what most people feel. Things become ludicrously disproportionate, and end up being unnecessarily cruel. That’s what the trans debate seems to have become. Most people don’t give a sh*t. I genuinely believe most people just want to let people be themselves. All they’re doing is making a tiny portion of society who have a really tough time anyway have an even tougher time
What Tennant’s Response Means For Doctor Who’s Future
The Fourteenth Doctor’s Return Has Been Theorized Since 2023

For many, Tennant’s return has been considered an inevitability following the ending of Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary specials. Following his bigeneration, which allowed him and Gatwa’s Doctor to continue to co-exist, the Fourteenth Doctor settled down on Earth with his own home and TARDIS alongside the Noble family. Despite his ostensible retirement, dialogue suggested that the Time Lord must reunite with Fifteen when his final moments arrive.
When the bigeneration first occurred, both Donna (Catherine Tate) and the Fifteenth Doctor suggested that the opportunity would finally allow the Time Lord to process several lifetimes’ worth of trauma and give the Fifteenth incarnation a fresh start. As such, it has been theorized that when the time comes for the Fifteenth Doctor to regenerate, he and Fourteen will merge, bringing their consciousness and experiences into one being. However, with Tennant refuting the rumor, it is clear any potential return for him isn’t in the works just yet.
Our Take On Tennant’s Doctor Who Future
Doctor Who’s Future Has Yet To Be Decided
Currently, Doctor Who‘s future remains a question mark, despite spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea already wrapping filming. In order to maintain showrunner Russell T Davies’ promise of yearly Doctor Who, the third season would’ve needed to enter production within the first half of 2025 to meet a 2026 air date, but the writer has stated that decisions on a third season renewal would only be given after season 2 has aired. Nevertheless, Tennant’s defense of Gatwa and Whittaker is sure to be appreciated by Doctor Who fans who have enjoyed their tenures.
