Doctor Who Needs To Bring David Tennant Back, But Not In The Way You Think

I’m finally ready to admit that Doctor Who needs David Tennant, but not in the way most people think. Following the shocking bi-generation in Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary special, fans have discussed the fact that the show needs to bring back David Tennant. After all, the Fourteenth Doctor exists on Earth and has a TARDIS.

I’ve resisted this idea because I love the fact that the Doctor is constantly changing. It’s integral to the TV show, and it keeps things feeling fresh. However, I’ve recently come around to the idea of David Tennant returning to Doctor Who, just not as an actor.

Why RTD Needs To Let Another Showrunner Take Over Doctor Who

RTD Hasn’t Adapted To The Demands Of Streaming

Being Doctor Who showrunner is a thankless job, and it’s not for the faint of heart. As such, I’m not suggesting RTD step down from a place of malice. I appreciate everything RTD did to revive interest in this show after the long gap between Classic Who and Revival Who, and RTD has written great episodes. However, RTD’s approach to showrunning is starting to feel stale.

The showrunner’s approach to crafting a narrative seems stuck in the cable era, even though streaming has drastically changed the landscape of storytelling. While shock value was necessary during RTD’s first era of Doctor Who, writers and showrunners on streaming shows have shifted their focus towards more complex stories and characters.

There’s a noticeable difference in audience reception between episodes written by him and those written by others in his second Doctor Who era. As much as I think RTD has done a lot of great things for Doctor Who, it’s time for him to pass the torch.

I Think David Tennant Should Be The Next Doctor Who Showrunner

David Tennant Has The Doctor Who Knowledge & Experience

Many fans want David Tennant to come back to Doctor Who, and I agree. I think David Tennant should be the next Doctor Who showrunner. Before people accuse me of just wanting my favorite Doctor to stick around, Tennant actually doesn’t play my favorite iteration of the character. However, I recognize that David Tennant is considered a mainstay of Doctor Who for a good reason.

As a Doctor Who superfan and a former Doctor, he knows the franchise well enough to maintain story integrity.

He played the Tenth Doctor, who is widely regarded as the most popular Revival Who Doctor. He also returned as the Fourteenth Doctor. His roots go much deeper than that, though. Tennant has loved the franchise since he was a kid, which means that he appreciates Classic Who.

As a Doctor Who superfan and a former Doctor, he knows the franchise well enough to maintain story integrity. Since he grew up on Classic Who, he might be inclined to bring back some of the elements, like Doctor Who serials and sci-fi elements. Tennant also made his directorial debut on Doctor Who Confidential, giving him behind-the-camera experience.

He has served as an executive producer on multiple shows, which is important when it comes to being a showrunner. The shows he has worked on in this capacity follow recent storytelling trends. I think he would be a great replacement for RTD if he were given the chance to work with seasoned writers or a co-showrunner with writing experience.

Other Great Options For The Next Doctor Who Showrunner

Many Great Writers & Showrunners On Other Shows Could Lead Doctor Who

While David Tennant would be my choice for Doctor Who showrunner, there are also other great options who could take on the job. The most obvious pick is Pete McTighe, given his strong connections to the series. I’m kind of on the fence about his Doctor Who episodes, but I could be swayed if The War Between the Land and the Sea is good.

Sarah Dollard has written great Doctor Who episodes and worked as a showrunner before. Jack Thorne could take the show back in the direction of sci-fi. Another fantastic option is Sally Wainwright, who has been responsible for multiple successful streaming shows. Finally, my favorite pick is Nida Manzoor, who is a massive Doctor Who fan and has won numerous awards. There are so many fantastic options that could revitalize Doctor Who.
