Doctor Who fans have something real to get excited about! The BBC dropped the first trailer for The War Between the Land and the Sea, a UNIT-focused spin-off that drags the Sea Devils back into the spotlight, and honestly, it looks way better than anyone expected.

The whole thing has a heavy, storm-soaked vibe that fans note feels like someone smashed together the moodier bits of ’70s-’80s Who with the early-2000s comeback energy.

The trailer leans hard into that classic “humanity vs. something ancient and angry” setup, and fan-favorite defense force UNIT is right in the thick of it. Jemma Redgrave is back as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, carrying on the family tradition—the character’s father ran UNIT throughout the Doctor’s ’70s and ’80s adventures. She’s popped up in the newer seasons a handful of times, but this time it looks like she’s taking the lead.

Return of ’70s-’80s ‘Doctor Who’ Feel

People online are already losing it in the best way. Many fans are thrilled that the Sea Devils aren’t being treated like some dusty footnote. Others keep pointing out how the trailer “feels like classic Who” (minus the cardboard sets, I assume). There’s a weird-but-good blend of old-school creature design with modern production, and folks are calling it exactly the right mix, nostalgic without being corny. And it definitely has a horror streak running through it, like the sort of slow-burn dread episodes that freaked us out as kids even when the monsters were made of rubber.

The nostalgia hits pretty hard watching it. UNIT stepping up front and center feels like slipping back into the era when the show leaned a bit more on weighty, less “zany” stories. And the Sea Devils actually look legitimately good! You can almost picture older fans nudging their kids and going, “These guys scared the heck out of me when I was your age.”

‘Doctor Who’ Spinoff Is a Good Sign

Even if you’re only a casual Who watcher, there’s something about the trailer that hooks you. It’s got the tension, the big set pieces, and probably some sort of commentary on current events tucked in there—classic Who habits die hard. You finish watching and immediately want the first episode now, because it feels like they might actually deliver a spin-off that respects the old Who without getting stuck in it.

Seeing the reaction online, it’s kind of infectious. There’s a great mix of hype, nostalgia, confusion, excitement—basically the full Doctor Who fan spectrum. Doctor Who‘s future has been a little uncertain lately, so if this series sticks the landing, it could be one of those rare spin-offs that doesn’t feel like an afterthought but actually gives fans something new to rally around.
