The late Queen had a heartbreaking concern about her death, her daughter Princess Anne has revealed.

Anne was by her mother’s side when she peacefully passed away at 3:10PM on September 8 in Balmoral Castle, at the age of 96. She later spoke about Her Majesty’s worries in the BBC documentary, Charles III: The Coronation Year and revealed that the Queen felt it would be “more difficult” logistically if she died at Balmoral, concerned about causing issues for other people, even at the end of her life. “We did try and persuade her that that that shouldn’t be part of the decision-making process,” Anne recalled. “I hope she felt that that was right in the end, because I think we did.”

Elsewhere in the documentary, the Princess spoke about the “serendipity” of being in Balmoral when her mother was dying. By chance, both Charles and Anne were in Scotland at the time of the Queen’s sudden deterioration and so were able to be with their mother well ahead of the rest of the family. It was also Anne who accompanied her mother’s coffin from Scotland to Buckingham Palace for her final journey, in a stoic act of respect and devotion.

In a statement issued from the plane bringing Her Late Majesty back to London, the Princess said: “I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest Mother’s life. It has been an honour and a privilege to accompany her on her final journeys. Witnessing the love and respect shown by so many on these journeys has been both humbling and uplifting.

“We will all share unique memories. I offer my thanks to each and everyone who share our sense of loss. We may have been reminded how much of her presence and contribution to our national identity we took for granted. I am also so grateful for the support and understanding offered to my dear brother Charles as he accepts the added responsibilities of The Monarch.” Anne poignantly finished the statement: “To my mother, The Queen, thank you.”

Royal author Robert Hardman detailed the moment Charles was told his mother had passed away in his book, Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story. According to Hardman, the heir had stepped away from the Queen’s bedside to clear his head and had gone out to gather mushrooms. He received the news that she had died as he was driving back to Balmoral when his most senior aide took a call. Charles pulled over and was addressed for the first time as ‘Your Majesty’ – signalling he was now King.

Following the death of the Queen, a footman found a locked red box of paperwork by her bed. When it was opened, staff discovered two sealed letters: one to her son and heir, now King Charles III, and the other to Sir Edward Young, her devoted private secretary. It was Sir Edward who recorded the initial details of the Queen’s death: “Very peaceful. In her sleep. Slipped away. Old age. She wouldn’t have been aware of anything. No pain,” he wrote in a memo.
