Prince George is set to take on a significant role held by his father, the Prince of Wales, which means as part of his inheritance, he will take ownership of the Duchy of Cornwall Estate, spanning 135,000 acres, which includes the development of the Nansledan Estate in Cornwall, located in one of Britain’s most renowned party towns – Newquay.

Newquay is a Cornish town known as one of Britain’s top party destinations in the early 2000s and a popular choice for stag dos and hen parties. According to news outlet, CornwallLive, it was even listed as the seventh most popular destination for stag dos in the UK in 2018, thanks to its bustling bars and restaurants.

Situated at the heart of Cornwall’s famed north coast, Nansledan is a 540-acre extension to the seaside town of Newquay. His Majesty, King Charles’s vision was to create a “thriving mixed-use community with homes, shops, offices, cafes/restaurants and leisure opportunities all within walkable neighbourhoods,” according to the estate’s website.

The Independent, have since described the town as “shaking off its party past”, and undergoing a transformation from a party town to being a foodie haven, full of independent restaurants.

Located on Cornwall’s Atlantic Coast, Newquay has also previously been voted as “One of the Nation’s Favourite Seaside Towns” in a Which Holiday Survey. The current Duke is the Prince of Wales, who is the 25th Duke in the Nansledan Estate’s history.

Taking its name from the revived Cornish language, Nansledan means ‘broad valley’. The development is well on its way to becoming a sustainable community of up to 4,000 new homes, supported by employment creation.

Prince William took over the Duchy of Cornwall in September 2022, following the death of his grandmother and the accession to the throne of his father to the British throne.

The Duchy consists of around 52,449 hectares of land in 20 counties, mostly in the South West of England. It was established by Edward III in 1337 and the estate’s revenues are passed to Prince William, who uses them to fund his family, charitable and private activities.

In an old ITV documentary, titled ‘Prince Charles: Inside the Duchy of Cornwall, Charles revealed how a comment by his eldest son reduced him to tears.

In a clip, William, talking to a second-generational farmer, Mervyn Keeling, said: “I’ve started to think about how I will inherit the Duchy one day and what I do with it. I think it’s really important, the family angle, I really do.”

King Charles, reflecting on the clip, said he was “deeply touched and moved” by William’s comment which was “reducing him to tears”.

The portfolio of land, property and investments is valued at more than £1 billion, which provides an income for the heir to the throne and will one day be the responsibility of Prince George.
