Chennedy Carter, Angel Reese help Chicago Sky snap Storm’s home winning streak

Chennedy Carter, Angel Reese help Chicago Sky snap Storm’s home winning streak

After hitting his first three-pointer of the season, Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese looked a little in disbelief, like most everyone else at Climate Pledge Arena on Friday night.

But after hitting his second consecutive long shot from the top of the hole, Reese momentarily stopped the shot as the ball sailed over the net before returning to the court.

It was such a night for the Storm, who lost 88-84 to the Sky’s two-woman sabotage team of Reese and Chennedy Carter.

“Angel plays with energy and confidence,” Storm forward Nneka Ogwumike said when asked about Reese’s three-point shooting. “It’s not something she’s known for, but she’s in the league. Everyone in this league has the ability and she showed it today.”

“She definitely demanded that respect with her outside hitting tonight.”

Seattle, which has won eight straight home games, lost for the first time at home since the season opener on May 14.

The Storm (13-7) also had their four-game winning streak snapped, starting with their nine-game home stretch.

In the previous four games, Seattle has won by double digits while playing what coach Noelle Quinn described as “beautiful basketball.”

But in front of a crowd of 10,725, which included Connecticut Huskies star Paige Bueckers, dozens of Sky fans and many wearing Reese’s No. 5 jersey, the Storm’s defense was unremarkable as it struggled to contain the agile Carter and slow Reese.

“She’s a tough opponent because she puts a lot of pressure on the rim,” Quinn said. “She’s very physical. … When you’re competing vertically, she can still get to the penthouse and finish in front of you.”

Carter finished with 33 points, two shy of the personal record she set against the Storm four years ago, and Reese extended her WNBA record for consecutive games with double-doubles to 12 with personal bests of 27 points and 10 rebounds.

No other Sky player scored more than nine points.

“She has top speed,” Quinn said of Carter. “You can’t do much. She’s not in a screen so you can’t really trap her. She’s in a lot of isolation and downhill situations. Then her efficiency, 15 of 24, she doesn’t miss a lot of shots because she’s inside the two-foot box.

“I thought Angel Reese played well. She’s a dog. Her mentality is to be tough and play harder than you. She plays with a lot of confidence. I don’t think we can match or surpass that energy.”

The Storm countered with a balanced attack led by Jordan Horston’s season-high 20 points.

Ogwumike added 16 points while Ezi Magbegor had 13 points, eight rebounds and a franchise-record eight blocks.

“It’s just the decisive energy of Ezi taking those shots and hitting them,” Ogwumike said. “It’s always a surprise every time even though we know she’s capable of doing it. I’m really excited to know we have her as a finisher or a finisher on defense.”

Jewell Loyd had 13 points, five assists and three steals while Skylar Diggins-Smith had 12 points and nine assists.

Seattle led 42-40 at halftime and were down 30-22 in the third, then trailed 70-64 at the start of the fourth.

Chicago led 84-75 with 1:36 left in regulation when the Storm responded with a 7-0 run to close the gap to two points.

Reese hit a pair of free throws with 18.4 seconds left to seal the win for the Sky.

“We gave up 30 points in the third quarter,” Ogwumike said. “That’s something you can’t do when you play a team like that. It was tough out there. And of course, at the end, we were able to make a push and yeah, time ran out.”

The Storm-Sky rematch will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday at Climate Pledge Arena.

“Our mindset is this game is over and we can’t get it back,” Quinn said. “We’re going to prepare. We’re going to adjust. We’re going to review the film and see where we can do better with a quick turnaround and an early game on Sunday.

“We can’t stop there. Let’s move forward and keep doing better.”
